Milland Stores was opened in December 2011 by Hugh Bonneville

Milland Community Shop & Cafe is owned by, and is for the benefit of, the local community. Our aim is to

  • understand the needs and provide an excellent customer experience and service
  • source and provide goods, local and quality produce in an economically sustainable way
  • provide outreach services to enhance the quality of life in the local community
  • encourage volunteering to deliver a range of supportive services into the community
  • enable the young to develop skills and gain experience vital to obtaining a first job

In doing all these things we believe we will strengthen the social hub, engage and support the well-being of the local community. We look forward to welcoming you and hope you will visit and enjoy what we consider to be a unique and enjoyable experience.

We would like to give a  big thank you to those who have been behind us, including The Plunkett Foundation, Action in Rural Sussex, The South Downs National Park, Chichester District Council and South Downs & Low Weald Leader. We would also like to give a big vote of thanks to Chris Etherington and the people at his company Palmer & Harvey for their huge generosity and help. Without all this support, there would be no Milland Community Shop.

The shop is designed to be Green.  Heating comes from a ground source heat pump, fully funded by Chichester District Council. Sam Ogilvie, the designer and builder, together with Neal Berriman’s team who have conducted most of the on-site work are all Millanders. Green Oak Carpentry who designed and supplied the frame (made of sustainable green oak) are from Rake.

“Best Community Initiative” Award

Milland Stores & Cafe’ was awarded the prize for “Best Community Initiative” at the annual “Life in Petersfield Awards”. The whole community should be very proud of what has been achieved.

Although there are many community shops across the country most have been borne to save existing facilities. Our Milland Shop is pretty much unique in that it has been built from scratch with the aim of supporting local outreach services and community projects.
